6 Popular Holiday Destinations in Spain
While you are out on the road, here are a few of the top-visited Spanish holiday spots for you to consider:
Alicante
Valencia Alicante ticks off all the boxes people expect on their Spanish tour: Food, Sand and Fun.
Spend cool mornings exploring Alicante’s streets, museums and churches. By day, there is the endless chain of white sand beaches that inspired the area’s name Costa Blanca or White Coast.
At sunset, stroll the seaside marble promenade of the Explanada de España or explore the charming whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets of the Mediterranean old-town.
By night, start with El Barrio’s many bars around Catedral de San Nicolás and end up with clubbing and casinos on Paseo del Puerto. Calle Castaños, which heads up towards the city centre from the seafront has an excellent mid-week ambience.
Malaga
Malaga is located on the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun), one of the most celebrated stretches of coastline in the world.
But it isn’t only about fun and sun. The capital of the Costa del Sol blends its history with modern energy. The city celebrates its rich cultural past. Picasso’s birthplace has a thriving art scene with a handful of new art galleries, a beautifully redeveloped port area, and Soho, its emerging art district. It is a city of contrasts. You can take in the Roman Amphitheater, a Moorish fortress and the iconic Pompidou Centre almost at a glance.
For fun, Malaga combines the hard-core reputation of the Costa del Sols’s endless nightlife with a restaurant scene that ranges from world-class to decidedly rustic. It is truly an old-world city with a very modern edge.
Barcelona
Barcelona is a 2000-year-old architectural and cultural treasure dating back to the Roman era. It blends a gothic quarter, 14th-century cathedrals, and the Modernisme of Gaudí and the Catalans. With many museums to choose from, check out the works of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró.
It is a city of food that celebrates simple, flavourful, local ingredients – fresh seafood, cured hams, market produce, and divine paellas. Basque tapas bars, Galician seafood taverns, and modern Japanese and European restaurants all elbow each other for space in Barcelona’s culinary heart.
Barcelona has everything. Jog, a stroll or swim at the seaside or ride your bike in the surrounding hillsides. You can also admire the city’s botanic and sculptural gardens if you want to stay closer to town.
At night the city hums, and after midnight all manner of bars imaginable fill up with locals and travellers alike. If you are still standing, you will hear the clubs calling at 3am.
Mallorca
Mallorca, the “Crown Jewel of the Mediterranean”, is as drenched in history as it is in the Balearic sun. Home to Roman ruins and Spanish architecture, Mallorca has a legendary coastline of stunning beaches and secluded coves. Head inland for limestone mountains, wineries and fresh produce farms.
The island contrasts quiet mountain and fishing villages against the luxury resort life, high-end marinas, and the nightclubs of the Magaluf strip. It is a paradise suited to all types of travellers, from hedonists and peace seekers to everyone in between.
Mallorca is one of the most popular vacation spots in Europe for many reasons. Despite them all, the coastline and the dream of the laid-back Balearic lifestyle have always been the major draw.
Gran Canaria
Third-largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, it is the most populated and home to over half of the archipelago’s permanent residents.
Called a miniature continent, Gran Canaria is home to three distinct regions — a leafy north, a green mountainous centre and a desert-like southern end. Its diverse mini-climates can have you moving through blinding sunshine one moment and into a thick, wet fog the next. It has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and is home to plant-life found nowhere else on earth.
The island is a haven for the active, offering watersports, biking and excellent hiking opportunities with a seemingly endless variety of terrain to explore. Windsurfing, kiteboarding and sailing are extremely popular here and the island is home to some of the world’s top professionals for much of the year.
Las Palmas De Gran Canaria, the capital, is no sleepy Spanish seaside town. It is one of the largest cities in Spain and hosts a container port, giving it an international flavour on top of the Canarian vibe. Chinese, Indian and African cultures combine with Spanish history in Spain’s 9th largest city.
Las Palmas has everything — world-class shopping, historical architecture, and a vibrant nightlife and restaurant scene. Las Canteras, one of the world’s top-rated city beaches, stretches 2 km into the heart of the city lined by bars restaurants and open-air terraces. It is the perfect place to gather with the locals and family for a sunset dinner or drink.
Tenerife
Home to two UNESCO world heritage centres (one of them containing the world’s third-largest volcano) Tenerife is a natural and cultural playground. It is not surprising travellers and locals alike call it the “Land of 1000 Experiences”.
It is the most populated island in Spain. Despite its hefty population, its reputation as a party hotspot, and a Carnaval second only to Rio, the island offers much more than drunken revelry. With over 6 million tourists annually, Tenerife has 2 airports to handle the influx.
Whether you head North for its beautiful natural pools or south for its beaches, the island has something for everyone. It is a sports lovers paradise with biking, hiking, and excellent diving year-round. If golf is your thing, the island has plenty of courses, most of them world-class.
Tenerife is also a foodie paradise offering much more than the English breakfast it was once famous for. The local restaurant scene has been steadily developing for a few years now and offers everything from traditional tapas to Michelin stars.
Five Easy Ways to Lower the Cost of your Car Hire
If you are going on holiday and you want the freedom to move around independently, hiring a car just makes sense. Unfortunately, freedom always comes with responsibility – and a cost. To save yourself some money it is important to make the right choices about car hire before you go, because making the wrong choices could get very expensive.
Here are 5 ways to hire the car you want at a price you can afford:
1. Always Pre-Book online
Pre-booking your car hire is always cheaper than walking up to the rental counter at the airport or even going into the main office in town. And that doesn’t even factor in the cost of a taxi to your hotel before you can drop in at the office to check the costs.
Rates can vary as much as 75 per cent depending on how early you make your booking, so pre-book early to ensure the best savings.
2. Don’t get burned by high excess rates
While an excess insurance waiver is a must to protect you in a worst-case scenario, not all excess insurance is created equally. Car hire firms can charge up to £20 per and only provide partial cover. To avoid this, arrange your own comprehensive excess in advance.
You won’t only save money upfront, you will protect yourself from nasty surprises. You don’t want to wait until tragedy strikes to discover things like your windscreen, wing mirrors or damage to the undercarriage are not covered by the shop policy.
Do your research and buy a full-coverage standalone policy. You won’t regret you did. Prices cant start as low as 3£ per day, and an annual policy will protect you wherever you hire a car, year-round.
3. If you bring the kids, bring the car seats
Hire companies make almost as much money selling you additional services as they do renting you the car. Every extra costs money, and child car seats are an extra. With some services, the price for one week can be as high as £60, and you would probably still have to install it yourself. Be prepared and bring a seat both you and your child are familiar with. Most airlines will even carry them at no extra cost.
4. Say no to Satnav
Whether you are on iPhone or Android you already have access to what is likely a better map and a system you are familiar with. Spend less money on a local sim card and data package. Not only will it be much cheaper, but you can also make local calls if you need to. You can even throw in the cost of a local guide book and still come out way ahead.
- Check the fuel policy
When you are booking online, be sure to to check each company’s return policy for fuel replacement and choose the most cost-effective one. Many car hire firms have what they call a full-empty policy. Simply put, you get the car with a full tank and are expected to return it empty.
While that may seem convenient, it could be expensive. The hire firm will expect you to pay their inflated rates to fill the tank. If you don’t want to pay for the convenience, it is much cheaper to top the car up yourself before returning it. Make sure to check and mark down the level before you drive off the lot.

A full driver’s license is required for all car hires.
I’m under 25 Can I rent a car? What if I’m over 75?
Yes, you can rent a car. But you need to be aware that most rental agencies have a minimum of 21 years of age.
Also, keep in mind that the requirements can change from country to country and area to area.
You may need to purchase supplementary coverage if your age is not between 25 to 70.
Please input the main driver’s age during your search to ensure your quote is accurate.
Can I rent a car with a full to full fuel policy in Spain?
You can rent a car with full-to-full fuel policy. When entering your search criteria please make sure you have the full-to-full selected.
Please be aware that while initially cheaper, under specific circumstances a full-to-full policy may not be the most cost-effective option. To provide a real-world example, for the four-hour journey between Alicancante and Malaga Airport, pre-purchasing gas may be the more economical option.
How do I compare car hire services in Spain?
Carhirespain.net gives you the information you need to make informed decisions prior to booking. We provide you with more than straight cost comparisons. We also provide valuable information regarding agency ratings, car size and fuel policies.
How do I find reviews of hire cars in Spain?
Before you make a commitment, reviews provided by other customers are an excellent way to ensure you are making the best decision possible.
At Carhirespain.net we provide you access to ratings and reviews left by thousands of people who have already hired cars in Spain. We take several key factors into consideration, everything from the quality of the counter service to the value you receive for your money. We put in the research so you don’t need to.
What is an excess?
if your booking includes Collision Damage (CDW) and Theft Waivers (TW), you may still be required to pay an excess on any claims you make. If during the car hire, any theft or damage occurs, the excess is a predetermined amount you are liable to pay.
How does it work?
To provide a real-world example, if your car is stolen or damaged and you have an excess of 1500 EUR, you are liable to pay any amount up to and including 1500 EUR. If the damage incurred exceeds the value of your excess it will be covered by your policy. You will not be required to pay anything above the excess amount.
Please note that with some policies certain items are not included in your CDW and TW coverage. Items like windscreens and the undercarriage of your vehicle may be excluded from your policy and require payment in addition to the excess.
During the pick-up process, the agent will place a hold against the main driver’s credit card for the excess as a deposit in case of a mishap. The held amount is refunded when you return the car undamaged. The hold return may take a few days to process.
How does excess reimbursement insurance work?
You can purchase reimbursement insurance for your excess on your own or from one of our agents. In either case, you will still be required to provide an excess deposit directly to the hire agent. Should the car be damaged, you can make a claim for the excess reimbursement through your insurance provider.
How do I find my excess amount?
If you are still deciding on a car to hire, you can confirm the excess amount while searching by clicking on the Important Information. Your excess details will be located under the Popular or Insurance sections.
If you have a booking confirmation, you excess details are located in your rental conditions and on your voucher. The details are located under Manage Booking on our website.
Which costs are included in the rental price?
All charges applicable to your car hire are described online or in your terms and conditions.
You must provide the correct information. Your pick up and drop off details and main driver’s age (if under 25 or over 70) all affect the accuracy of charges on your total rate.
In addition, you are required to pay a security deposit and, in some cases, a fuel deposit during the pick-up procedure. All deposits are the responsibility of the main driver. Please ensure you have sufficient funds to complete the car hire.
Additional charges may also occur for the following:
- inadequate or incorrect documentation
- insufficient funds for the deposit/excess
If not pre-booked online, the following service or products are subject to additional charges at the point of rental:
- child seats
- adding additional drivers
- GPS rental
- cross border fees
- supplier’s insurance
- prepaid fuel options
Are there extra charges for changing my drop-off location?
Yes, if your pick-up and drop-off locations differ, one-way fee will be added to the displayed price. It is important to provide accurate pick-up and drop-off information to ensure the price you are quoted is accurate.
In some instances, the one-way fee may not be included in your prepaid total and will be required at the point of hire. It will, however, be displayed correctly as a cost at the time of booking. If in-person payment is required, that information will be clearly indicated in your booking details. Please check the Payments Section on your voucher.
Will I pay extra for late pick-up or drop-off?
Yes, if you choose pick-up or drop-off time outside of normal office hours an out of hours fee will be applied to your booking.
To guarantee your car is ready for you when you arrive and that your billing is accurate, you need to supply the correct information.
Are there additional mileage charges?
Your mileage allowance depends on the mileage policy you selected at the time of booking.
If you chose a policy with limited mileage you are required to pay the supplier’s rate for additional kilometres or miles. Additional mileage fees can be quite expensive. We recommend you take care to choose either an unlimited mileage policy or ensure you have selected a mileage allowance appropriate for your intended journey.
During your online search, you can filter to display policies by limited or unlimited mileage. Mileage policies are also displayed under the Important Information for each vehicle.
If you have confirmed your booking, the rental information section under Manage Booking will display the mileage policy you selected. It will also be shown under Rental Conditions on your voucher.
Are there any cross-border charges?
It is very important to first confirm that the car rental supplier allows you to take the car across a border into the countries you wish to visit. If the answer is yes, a cross border fee will apply.
Cross border policies and fees can be significantly different across car rental suppliers, so be cautious during your search. To verify a cross border policy, check the Important Information section under Cross Border or Travel Restrictions for each vehicle.
If you have confirmed your booking, the rental information section under Manage Booking will display the cross border policy you selected. It will also be shown under Rental Conditions on your voucher.
Is there a discount for returning the car early?
No, because your car is reserved and can not be re-hired until your rental period expires, we are not able to offer a discount for returning the car early.
